Baby BeyZ

I can't explain why I am so happy Jay Z sperminated Beyonce. My jaw hit the floor at the end of her VMA performance and I think I squealed in delight when they showed Kanye and Jay's reaction.

Forget being Victoria Beckham's daughter. I want to come back as baby BeyZ!!

So Strange

Hidden dining table for small spaces. I don't dig.

It's Coming

It's getting dark outside. I'm oddly excited and nervous about what may happen. I hope it at least storms because I've made such a big deal out it. We moved all the patio furniture and shoved the BBQ against the stone wall. I made a pot of rice and a pot of korean tea. Am I crazy? Maybe. Better safe than sorry, right?

Absence

Hi friends! Sorry for my absence. My mom is in town (yay!!) so I've been occupied with keeping her entertained and getting shit done around the house while she keeps Olivia entertained!

What a week already! The earthquake. Where were you? I was rearranging my dishes. I first thought it was rocky running around upstairs. Realized it was an earthquake, grabbed my mom and Olivia and stood in a doorframe, which I learned from Saved by the Bell. I was quite traumatized afterwards. My imagination went rampant with what-ifs.

Then I caused a slight flood in the house. Remember that post of how I discovered I had to clean the filter of my laundry machine? Well I did that a Few days ago and left the cap off because it stunk and I was going to air it out. Well the dumb ass that I am forgot to put it back on, and put in another load of laundry! Walked away for 5 minutes before remembering and from hearing Mr. Ho screaming expletives because the basement ceiling was leaking. Everything is fine now but gosh. That was also traumatizing.

Now here comes Hurricane Irene! We bought water and food. I had to get flashlights and they were all sold out at Ace Hardware, target, kmart, walmart, and home depot. Finally got some from office depot of all
Places. I can't imagine them
Being very good so I'll have to remember to stock up later. I also Gathered the good jewels and important documents and hard drive in ziplocks. Just in case!!

That's all for now. Hope you all stay safe and dry!

Craigslist ad

Lol!!!

$1000 Best. Roommate. Ever.

Date: 2011-08-18, 3:39PM PDT

Konichiwa bitches. Are you looking for the most kick-ass fucking roommate that ever lived? If so, look no further. You fucking found him. I'm a 25-year-old professional marketing agent with experience at bad-ass companies in New York Fucking City. That's right! What you know about experience? I graduated from Auburn University in Alabama, and moved to NYC at the ripe, tender age of 22. After deciding that New York was a stinky shit-hole, I moved back to Alabama to cultivate more professional experience. Why? So I can make millions of dollars and not have to post shit like this on Craigslist.

Anyway, so I landed this job with a marketing firm in San Francisco, and I have no fucking clue where to live. Honestly, I'm moving there in 3 weeks, so I don't give a shit if I have to sleep in your bathtub.

A bit about me: I'm respectful, quiet, clean and I won't bother any of your shit. If you leave shit out, I'm just like, "Oh fuck I better not mess with this shit, because it's not mine." I turn off lights. I clean toilets. Fuck it. I'll even cook for you. That's right! My dad is a chef and taught me everything there is to know about cooking southern cajun cuisine. I'll fry green tomatoes, cover them with marinated crab meat and smother that shit in bearnaise. EVERY. GODDAMN. NIGHT. Don't eat meat? That's fucking FANTASTIC! I'll make a zucchini and yellow squash carpaccio that will knock your fucking socks off.

I also read a lot. I fucking LOVE books. Vonnegut, Palahniuk, Hawthorne. All that shit. I read Tuesday's with Morrie the other day. It's a sad story, but I learned something about life, love, knowledge and the pursuit of something greater than myself. Fucking smart. Do you like movies? I fucking love them. We can watch the shit out of some movies together if you like, or go get drinks, or work out, hike, play video games or play a game of one-on-one basketball, or I don't have to talk to you at all. It's completely UP TO YOU!

Sometimes I play guitar. Are you going to love getting baked and listening to Bob Dylan and Pink Floyd? LIVE? WHENEVER THE FUCK YOU WANT? Of course you are! I'll take requests and learn any song you like, because I have the voice of an angel and the acoustical stylings of James Fucking Taylor. AWWWWWW SHIT YEA!

A lot of people ask me, "Hey, you're from Alabama. Are you racist?" And, the answer to that question is, no. I'm not racist or judgmental at all. I love everyone. I'm a secular humanist. I FUCKING LOVE PEOPLE. That's the only requirement to being a secular humanist actually. You have to like other human beings and want to help them for no other reason than they are human regardless of race, religion or sexual preference. WTF?!!!? Pretty fucking cool right?

I own almost nothing! I'm driving my car from Alabama to California in which I'll be transporting two duffelbags of clothes, one laptop computer, one guitar, one cell-phone with charger, 8 pairs of shoes, one picture frame, probably some condoms and a shitload of beef jerky and Pringles for the trip. Though, you can expect the jerky to be gone upon my arrival. Unless you'd like me to pick up some on my way into the city. See?! I'm the most considerate person you've ever met. I'm offering to buy you shit already!

Am I interested in your pad? You can bet my nomadic ass I am! I only require 4 walls, a ceiling and a floor to shelter me from the elements. Other than that, anything else will be considered a convenient plus. I'm taking being a roommate to the next level. Email me! I'll hook yo ass up with Facebook links, background checks, credit reports, phone numbers, resumes, references, awards, sexual history, pictures of karate trophies and a list of the top 10 women I'd like to bang before I die. If you want a next-generation roommate who consistently blows your fucking mind with awesomeness, then hit me up. I'm ready to give you money.

Another Mom Tale

Was telling her about this video I saw on youtube of this guy who was trapped in an elevator for 41 hours.

Apparently, in Korea, there is this small, not very popular theater (like an off-Broadway kind of thing). This elementary school aged boy waited until the crowd left to be mischievous. What he didn't know was that he was locked in there by himself. The theater was closed for days and no one found him for an entire week. They finally reopened on the weekend and found him dead on the stage.

Where the effing hell was his mother?? Didn't she turn around at any point while leaving the facility and notice her son was not by her side??!

Dancing

I was chatting with my mother and she said something that really cracked me up. I think because it's just funnier in korean and was unexpected from her.

"These days, you just need to be able to shake your vagina to be considered a good dancer."

Died.

My tan

Makes me look like I haven't washed my face aka dirty. Thanks Mom. Thanks.

Reason

I'm really into looking at, coveting, dreaming about, wanting all these pretty shiny things because it's a distraction. Clothes, bags, shoes, jewelry, celebrities... It's my way of escaping from everyday life.

I'm not very good at dealing with pain in the physical and emotional sense. When the problems directly involve me, I sort of shut down.

I remember when I was in elementary school, my dad (he worked like 5 am-10 pm every day) was taking a bath. And I guess my mom found him unable to move his body? To this day I'm not sure what it was. A mini stroke? The ambulance came and I turned on the tv. My mom yelled at me. How could I watch tv when dad was in so much pain?

Because I couldn't deal. I could lose myself in the tv show and pretend like dad wasn't hurting.

Not the most healthy way in dealing with things.

I've never lost anyone close to me. That is my biggest fear.

Edit: Wanted to clarify that I am not "in pain" or any sort right now. That was just more of a side story.

Saturday Fever (no more)

Life is back to normal. Olivia's fever is gone. I actually ended up taking her to the doctor that day because she just didn't seem like herself. They diagnosed her with a random virus. Not very helpful but good to know it wasn't an infection or anything. They had to check her ears and they could not see through it because of the wax. So the nurse had to pin her head down and I had to hold her knees down so they could take it out. It was so heartbreaking to see her sobbing. I think she was more terrified than anything else. But to see how much wax came out of a baby's ear... Wow.

Anyway, today was a great day. I cleaned, did laundry. We took Olivia to Tysons because I had ordered some shoes online - Sam Edelman Marina Pump in red suede. I love them. They are a great shade of red! I don't know where I'm wearing them but I'll figure that out. I actually just added another pair to my shopping cart. I'm not sure if I want to pull the trigger on them just yet.

It was close to dinner time so we decided to go to Honey Pig! I haven't been there since I was pregnant! I never wanted to take Olivia there when she was younger because it is crazy loud and very smoky from the BBQ. But it was great today! The food was delish and Olivia was content eating rice, steamed egg, some seaweed banchan and watching Pororo. We ended the day with swings at the park. The weather was so nice! Not hot at all.

Great news. We have two new additions to the family! Mr. Ho's second cousin in Toronto had a baby boy and his cousin in Pittsburgh also had a boy! The new generations are growing by the minute. Now we are just eagerly awaiting the arrival of SIL's baby girl! I had a dream last night that we surprised her with a visit to Australia. She lived in a sick 4-level apartment and had so many people over to see the baby. I was trying to hold her but she was getting passed around all these old people and they had her wrapped up in a plastic bag.

Well, I guess I should see what Mr. Ho is up to in the basement. Bye, peeps!

Slow Cooker Cranberry Pork

Prep Time:
10 Min
Cook Time:
4 Hrs
Ready In:
4 Hrs 10 Min

Ingredients

  • 1 (16 ounce) can whole berry cranberry sauce
  • 1/3 cup French salad dressing
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 1 (3 pound) boneless pork loin roast

Directions

  1. In a medium bowl, stir together the cranberry sauce, salad dressing, and onion. Place pork in a slow cooker, and cover with the sauce mixture.
  2. Cover, and cook on High for 4 hours, or on Low for 8 hours. Pork is done when the internal temperature has reached 160 degrees F (70 degrees C).

Also, make sure to season the loin with salt, pepper, and garlic. I cooked on high for 4 hours and it was perfect. The combination of cranberry sauce and french dressing sounds disgusting but it was super delicious.

Roast Chicken Breasts with Garbanzo Beans, Tomatoes, and Paprika

yield: Makes 4 servings

active time: 15 minutes

total time: 35 minutes

Use leftovers for sandwiches the next day: Place shredded chicken, garbanzos, and tomatoes in a pita bread and top with the yogurt sauce.

  • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • 4 garlic cloves, pressed
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika*
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried crushed red pepper
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt or Greek yogurt
  • 4 chicken breast halves with bones
  • 1 15-ounce can garbanzo beans (chickpeas), drained
  • 1 12-ounce container cherry tomatoes
  • 1 cup chopped fresh cilantro, divided

Preheat oven to 450°. Mix first 5 ingredients in medium bowl. Pour 1 teaspoon spiced oil mixture into small bowl; whisk in yogurt and set aside for sauce. Place chicken on large rimmed baking sheet. Rub 2 tablespoons spiced oil mixture over chicken. Add beans, tomatoes, and 1/2 cup cilantro to remaining spiced oil mixture; toss to coat. Pour bean mixture around chicken. Sprinkle everything generously with salt and pepper.

Roast until chicken is cooked through, about 20 minutes. Sprinkle with 1/2 cup cilantro. Transfer chicken to plates. Spoon bean mixture over. Serve with yogurt sauce.

Back to Reality

I've been snapped back into my reality of being a mommy and a wife. Olivia has a pretty high fever (no other symptoms). Until now, fevers and colds have hardly fazed her. This time, she is not herself. Super fussy, easily frustrated. She had a nuclear meltdown because I told her her cheesestick would have to wait until after her diaper change. We are missing Little Gym just in case it's more than a fever. I predict it will be a long, very long, day.

The fever actually started yesterday. Last night, I went to pick up my car at the dealership. It was getting serviced. Driving home, I had all four windows down, the sunroof completely open and the music on blast. It was SO great. I really miss that.

Well, I better get back to the little one. But I'm going to post two really good recipes first.

Bummed Out

I haven't really felt like blogging about all the fun things in life. World news is simply depressing. The US economy, Syria, Somalia, London, helicopter crash in Afghanistan. WTF is going on?

Misery in world's largest refugee camp

By Sanjay Gupta, Chief Medical Correspondent
August 9, 2011 2:44 p.m. EDT

Dadaab, Kenya (CNN) -- Right now, this may be the most desperate place on Earth.

A drought, not seen in 60 years, compounded with near complete lawlessness and utter disregard for human life has made it so.

It is hard to imagine, but dust and starvation are nearly everywhere you look, and the world's largest refugee camp is thick with misery on this night. The smell is a combination of the acrid sweetness associated with malnourishment, anxious sweat and diesel fuel.

The fuel is used to keep away the swarming flies. It stinks more than it repels.

The children here are small, too small for their age. I met 5-year-old Janaw and saw him weigh in at 20 pounds. His brother is 4 and weighs closer to 15. And there is a youngest brother, Muhammad, just 3 months and light as a feather.

There is something else about these boys as well. I have seen children all over the world suffering through wars and nature's retaliations, and yet I can always elicit a smile. Play a game, snap a picture, shake a hand and the smile will come. Not here.

These too small children, listlessly clutching small bundles composed of everything they own in the world, barely look up. And, on the few occasions I do catch their eye, I see my own children's eyes looking back at me.

It makes me want to scream, but instead I nearly cry.

These children make their way into my dreams at night. With their yellowed, leathery skin, white eyelids, croup like cough and persistent sores, they reflect the consequences of inaction to a catastrophe that was neither sudden, nor a surprise.

This lack of water, and the subsequent loss of crops, followed by the death of livestock had been predicted for at least a year, and yet still there is a full on famine here, unlike the world has seen in a long time.

Feed the world's children. This, we should be able to do.

Muhammad's father, Hussein, packed up his belongings and started walking with his wife and kids after his last cow died, he told me. "Once the animals die, the kids are next," he said.

For more than a month, they walked. They made up a landscape of brilliant colors along the Somalia-Kenya border with babies bundled on their backs. They did most of their walking at night to avoid the heat of the day, and to avoid bandits. The bandits still found them, and stripped them of what little they had left.

"They were lucky they weren't also beaten for not having more," a doctor told me.

This family of five joins the refugee camp designed to hold 90,000 people. The population is more than 400,000 now, with at least 2,000 additional refugees coming in every day, according to the United Nations. It's as if the population of Cleveland had suddenly been relocated to this awful place.

I could tell within moments that little baby Muhammad was in a particularly dire condition. His eyes had hemorrhages in them, and he was expressionless and quiet. I remember a professor in medical school telling me, "It is always worse when the kids don't cry -- that is when you know, they are really sick."

The only time Muhammad made any noise was a high-pitched whoop when he took a breath in.

"Coqueluche," a nurse said in French. English translation: pertussis, or whooping cough.

"This is what happens when kids are not vaccinated," the nurse continued. "We are also seeing measles, tetanus and diphtheria."

On this night, Muhammad is lying in a bed with oxygen, getting antibiotics and finally getting some calories and fluids. It is still not clear that any of those treatments will have come soon enough.

Even more painful to realize is that every single one of his ailments could have been prevented.

Unfortunately, though, that hardly ever happens in the most desperate places on Earth.

Sunday Past

Hi friends. How was your weekend? I have some stuff to do around the house so here's a bullet-point rundown:

  • Mr. Ho played 2 games of football
  • Olivia and I went to an open playtime at the local community center. It was ok. She was still shy but no physical contact was made this time. Hallelujah.
  • More swings and slides at the park
  • Dinner at Mama's.
  • Target with Mama. We went to buy her lightbulbs but I ended up buying a yoga mat, 2 DVDs for Oli, 2 storage boxes for Oli's old clothes, tennis balls for Rocky, drawing paper and big crayons for Olive. Very productive and everything for under $100. Amazing!
  • Coffee trip to Chinatown Coffee Co. in DC
  • My absolute favorite DHuang was in town!!!! She came over and we just ate and talked. It was like old times with her standing on one side of the island (eating) and me sitting on the other side (eating) but also feeding a baby. I lovest her so much and am so proud of all that she's accomplished since she flew the nest. So happy I get to see her and the OGDM's in a month!
That was about it! Toodles!

Gonna Get Down on Fridayyy

How was your Friday, everybody? Well, it's only 9:06 PM so I guess it's still going for some of you. For moi, I will be heading up to shower and read soon. Old lady over here!

This morning, I decided to take Olivia to this open play time at Small Talkers. They have activities at this facility but have open play twice a week. Basically, a room full of toys with kids and parents. How did it go? Well, Olivia warmed up to the place quickly. She was playing with the toys well. But once the kids starting milling about, then it got a little tricky. Little Miss loves to dump things out and put them back in a container. I guess the toy she had was a hot commodity because kids kept coming over to take them from her and she was NOT having that. She would quickly grab the toy back from the kid. I'd take it away from her and tell her she would have to share and then the big ol' alligator tears would come running down her face. If the kid tried to get the toy back from Olivia, she would swat their hands away. *facepalm* I probably apologized a million times to a million mothers.

The best part was lunch. We went over to a little sushi restaurant next door, just the two of us. We shared some agedashi tofu and an udon. It was very enjoyable. She is such a sweetheart when its just the two of us. She gives me lots of kisses and hugs. I wish everyone could see this darling side of her. Even Mr. Ho commented today that she is unbelievably loving towards me. I love it when he tries to hug or kiss me in front of her. She pushed his face away. It's pretty hilarious. Hm.. Perhaps that is just encouraging her anti-social behavior?

During the car ride home, she proceeded to take big gulps from her sippy and spit it out. I was unaware. She passed out and when I went to get her, she and the carseat were drenched. I gingerly tried to take off her sopping tank top but it woke her up. And that was that. No nap for today.

I decided to tire her out for an early bed time so I took her to the park. She was very comfortable and led me to the swings, where I proceeded to push her for 45 minutes. Girlfriend was loving it and would not get off. I overheard the sweetest thing while we were there. This little girl, maybe 4 years old, asked her dad, "Can we best friends EVER?!" My heart melted!

So, early bedtime for Olive. Sushi Friday and Jersey Shore for me. Now, that I've blogged, I will put clean sheets on the bed, take a shower and read. I finished Shopaholic + Mini Shopaholic. I think I might do the Jaycee Dugaard memoir next. We'll see.

Later, peeps!

MAY-JOR Want

I keep forgetting to blog about this bag. I covet it. I want one in every single delicious color and material. Can you just imagine the beautiful rainbow it would make in my closet? Such joy!

This bag is the Proenza Schouler PS1 bag. Love, LOVE the pouchette. That would be my #1 and then the medium satchel. Love the poucehtte in the saddle color. And the medium in smoke. Le sigh.

I know, I talk about loving all the colors and pick neutral hues. Well, people, I am still working on my my bags and need to establish a neutral base first. These would be perfect for neutral starters. If I were going out of the neutral box, I'd love the dark blue, purple, and teal satchels.
But I really adore the saddle pouchette.

Today

Today was a good day! Well, it started off not so great. I tripped on the garage stairs and braced my fall with my bad left shoulder. I was super annoyed on my drive to Little Gym.

Little Gym. *sigh* Ok, it was a little better. She was a TAD bit more interest in the activities. But man, she's very...spirited? For instance, during the singing transition times, she would yell/babble and make this "stop" hand motion. And then slap my hands away when I tried to clap along. And during the ball time, she went up to each kid and took away their ball and then just chucked them to the side. Didn't even play with the ball. Mr. Ho just laughed and laughed when I told him the story, but I was mortified. I just don't really know how to handle these situations. It's all new to her. It's all new to me.

The best part was after class. We hung out by the fountain with another girl in our class. She came with her nanny. Apparently, the family just moved here from Boston and they will fly the nanny every week until they find a replacement. The current nanny is AWESOME! She's super friendly and you can tell she has a great bond with the little girl. She told me she works 10 (sometimes longer) hour days. Does the cooking, cleaning, laundry, grocery shopping, homework-ing, play time, EVERYTHING. The father is a doctor and the mother is a stay-at-home marketing director? I told her she is the type of nanny other moms will try to poach! But it was nice to talk to someone with a child, even if she was the nanny. By the looks if it, she is probably more of a mother to the child than the actual mother. With all that the nanny does, what do the parents do??! We actually made plans to hang out with the girls next Wednesday. Yay!

Olivia and I also did a Costco run and I made the best spare ribs in the slow cooker.

Twas my day, folks.

Asos.com always has fun stuff. Plus free shipping and free returns! :-D

Hello, my dear Mrs. OGDM! Thank you for the suggestion. After the Red Pants post, I went crazy searching online for a pair. I decided to go with J brand off the net-a-porter.com site! It was $1 less than the other sites (I don't know why) and free shipping. Can't wait to wear them. I've already got a few outfits in my head! I will have to check out asos.com.

Knee Pain

My right knee hurts. I've never injured it. But it occasionally hurts. Is it because it's raining? Am I going to be one of those old women who will say, "it's going to rain. I can feel it in my knee." Dreadful!

Baby Hairs

Does Olivia need a haircut? If so, in what style?? The likelihood of this happening anytime soon? Slim to none. Those hairs have been on her head since she was born! *tear* #mommyproblems
